Topsy Searches Twitter Better Than Twitter | NYTimes

Topsy is a dedicated site for searching Twitter. It’s better, it turns out, than Twitter’s own search functions.

If you’ve tried to search for tweets on Twitter’s built-in search box, you know it can be frustrating.

For a currently popular topic, you’ll get dozens of recent tweets. For an older topic, you may get no results at all. Twitter has an advanced search page, but a better alternative is Topsy, a dedicated Twitter search engine. It’s so good that even Twitter’s official guide for journalists suggests using Topsy to research news topics.

Topsy’s advanced search, linked from its home page, lets you search for specific Web domains or Twitter users, tweets posted during a specific period of time in the past, and for all tweets with the word “lady” but not “gaga.” You can also specify only tweets that include photo links, video links or Web links.

Topsy has indexed tweets back to mid-2008. It does not keep them all, but it does keep the ones that were retweeted a lot, or that came from people whom Topsy deems influential because they are often retweeted or cited in other people’s tweets. That same influence algorithm lets you sort search results by relevance rather than in chronological order.

Topsy is also a good way to check in on what’s hot on Twitter right now. The site’s home page features a frequently updated list of trending links, again sorted by relevance. For example, if a few celebrities tweet a video, it will rank higher than one tweeted by a larger group of little people. And there’s a special page devoted to trending videos. Click the video thumbnail, and Topsy pops up a video player rather than sending you to YouTube or another site. Right now the top video is a bunny playing with a ball of string. The people have spoken.

HootSuite Hits 2 Million Users [INFOGRAPHIC]

HootSuite, the social media dashboard and analytics tool, has reached a new milestone: 2 million users.

Invoke Media released HootSuite in December 2008 and it is widely used by individuals as well as organizations, governments and businesses. The White House, SXSW, Zappos and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia all use HootSuite, according to the company.

HootSuite hit the 1 million-user milestone in November 2010. Consumers and businesses have shared some 500 million messages to date.

The company shares some other statistics about its growth in a blog post.

I always feel better reading articles like this after singing an organization's or software's praise to a class or colleagues.

This looks like a great tool for showing leadership and building your organization's reputation online by sharing knowledge, expertise, and opinions on relevant topics.

Master List of Social Media Monitoring Solutions

The most extensive list of Social Media Monitoring tools I've ever seen—127 and growing.

Can't remember the last time I came across such a well-managed and curated list of social media tools. Glad I found this. Now, if only I had time to try them all!

Has anyone used some of the tools on the list? There are the usual big guys—Radian6, ScoutLabs, Cision, Vocus, and so on—but they make up a small fraction of the other 123 tools.

Thoughtfully organized by which social media each monitor. I would, however, love to see a ranking or voting system implemented. Hat tip regardless.

2/9 Class

Learning about how Radian6 works was definitely interesting.  I didn't know too much about it before class, but it was great to see how a single service could offer so many insights into an organization's brand online.  It seems like an incredibly powerful analytics tool that can really help an organization do some insightful monitoring.  At the same time, a great takeaway from the guest speaker was that no social media tool is a "magic bullet" - human insight is still needed to make your tools mean anything.

I'd like to see what other social media monitoring tools are out there.  As there are more and more social media platforms for information sharing and public discourse, is it really possible to see what everyone is saying about your brand, or can you just hope for a representive sample?  Is it possible to tell what the real ROI is from using social monitoring tools?  This seems like a really interesting area of study that I'd like to learn more about.
